Florida’s legislature on Thursday gave approved a bill that would ban so-called “sanctuary cities,” requiring local government agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
SB 168 was approved by a vote of 22-18 in the Senate and a vote of 68-45 in the House.
The bill now heads to Governor Ron DeSantis, who has previously expressed support for the measure and is expected to sign it into law.
Sanctuary cities have sprung up across the country in response to the Trump administration’s hard-line stance on illegal immigration. Last month a federal appeals court ruled that California’s controversial sanctuary state law does not conflict with federal immigration law. -Jaclyn Belczyk
